What is Lafarge Momentum Rank?

For Momentum Rank, we considered the residual momentum concept that was widely studied by Blitz and his colleagues as well as by Nobel Prize laureates Fama and French. However, we did not find any significant differences in the performances of stocks with different ranks of residual momentum. Therefore, we use traditional momentum instead.

Momentum Rank is determined using the standardized momentum ratio and other momentum indicators. The standardized momentum ratio is the average of the performances from 12 months ago to 1 month ago and 6 months ago to 1 month ago, divided by the beta of the stock over the past 12 months. To calculate the momentum ratio today, we would use the average of the two performance numbers.

For momentum, we found that stock price performance does not have a monotonic correlation with the momentum ratio. The stocks with the highest momentum ratios perform worse than those at about the 70th percentile. Therefore, for the momentum rank, we ranked the stocks at about the 70th percentile of the momentum ratio as the highest at 10.

Lafarge SA is a French limited liability company governed by French law and was founded in France in 1833 and was incorporated in 1884 under the name "J. et A. Pavin de Lafarge". The Company provides building materials. It is engaged in producing & selling cement, aggregates and ready-mix concrete, mostly under the "Lafarge" brand name. Its building products and solutions are used to construct and renovate homes, buildings and infrastructures. At year-end 2013, Company cement production operated, in 56 countries, 113 cement plants and 42 grinding plants, with an annual production capacity of 221 million tons. It also manages cement trading activities. The Company aggregates and concrete are used as raw materials for concrete, masonry, asphalt, and other industrial processes, and as base materials for roads, landï¬lls, and building. As of December 31, 2013, Company had approximately 437 production facilities for aggregates in 23 countries. The Company's Ready-mix concrete had 1,026 concrete plants in 33 countries as of December 31, 2014. The Company also produces asphalt in North America and the United Kingdom, and sells either as a stand-alone product, or in conjunction with contracted paving. The Company operates in Western Europe, North America, Central & Eastern Europe, Middle East & Africa, and Asia.
