Dendreon  (FRA:DNR) Degree of Financial Leverage Explanation

Degree of Financial Leverage (DFL) is a leverage ratio that measures the sensitivity of a company’s Earnings per Share (EPS) to fluctuations in its operating income, also referred to as Earnings Before Interest and Taxes (EBIT), resulting from adjustments in its capital structure. DFL is an essential tool for companies to assess the appropriate level of debt or financial leverage in their capital structure. When EBIT remains relatively stable, it results in stable earnings and earnings per share. In such cases, the company may consider taking on substantial debt. However, for companies operating in industries with significant fluctuations in EBIT, it is advisable to keep debt at a manageable level.

The higher Degree of Financial Leverage, the more volatile earnings will be. Because interest is a fixed expense, leverage can amplify earnings and EPS. This is beneficial when EBIT is growing, but it can become problematic in tough economic conditions when EBIT is under pressure.

Be Aware

The use of financial leverage varies across different industries and business sectors, and the application of Degree of Financial Leverage (DFL) should be adjusted accordingly.

Its product portfolio includes active cellular immunotherapy and small molecule product candidates to treat a range of cancers. PROVENGE(r) (sipuleucel-T), is its first commercialized product licensed by the United States Food and Drug Administration, and is a first in class autologous cellular immunotherapy for the treatment of asymptomatic or minimally symptomatic, metastatic, castrate-resistant (hormone-refractory) prostate cancer. Prostate cancer is the most common non-skin cancer among men in the United States, with over one million men currently diagnosed with the disease, and the second cause of cancer deaths in men in the United States. The Company owns worldwide rights for PROVENGE. The Other potential product candidates we have under development include our investigational active cellular immunotherapy, DN24-02, which potentially may be used for the treatment of patients with bladder, breast, ovarian and other solid tumors expressing HER2/neu. In addition, the Company has developed an orally-available small molecule treatment targeting TRPM8 that could be applicable to multiple types of cancer. The Company currently depends on specialized vendor relationships that are not readily replaceable for some of the components for its active immunotherapy candidates. Products such as chemotherapeutics, androgen metabolism or androgen receptor antagonists, endothelin A receptor antagonists, antisense compounds, angiogenesis inhibitors and gene therapies for cancer are also under development by a number of companies and could potentially compete with PROVENGE and its other product candidates. The Company's competitors include major pharmaceutical companies. The Company is subject to a variety of federal, state and local regulations relating to the use, handling, storage and disposal of hazardous materials, including chemicals and radioactive and biological materials. The Company is also subject to regulation by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration ('OSHA'), and the Environmental Protection Agency ('EPA'), and to regulation under the Toxic Substances Control Act.
