Geode Capital Management was founded in 2001 as an asset management company. It was created as a division of Fidelity Investments at first, aimed as a test-bed for new investment strategies. Geode Capital would grow quickly from its inception, expanding its services of systematic absolute return strategies to include equity index strategies. Geode Capital would become a fully independent company based out of Boston by 2003, launching its domestic and international equity index strategies and continuing to manage new systematic strategies for its clients. While Fidelity remained a customer of Geode, becoming independent meant that the young company would find more business with other indexing companies at the same time offering hedge fund investments to its parent company’s customers. Although Geode Capital does primarily service investment companies, it also provides its service to offshore investment trusts and bank or thrift institutions. Just one year after its independence, it would have over $50 billion assets under management. Geode Capital would introduce more and more strategies, increasing its offerings to include enhanced cash commodity strategies, long extension strategies, special opportunities, and commodity long and short strategies, among others, as a testament to its focus on innovation. By 2010, it would have doubled its assets under management, crossing over the $100 billion mark. It now has global reach in close to 100 different markets worldwide, trading, settling securities, and dealing in currencies all around the globe with a main focus in Europe, North America, and Southeast Asia. Geode Capital Manage invests in public equity and alternative investment markets, primarily focusing on the growth and value stocks of small to large cap companies. Geode does an extensive market research using quantitative analysis, employing a team of talented individuals that has a great range of backgrounds, education, and experiences with about half being investment professionals.
