A. O. Smith Corporation (AOS) has announced significant changes in its leadership structure that will take effect on July 1, 2025. Kevin Wheeler, who has served as both chairman and CEO, will move into the role of executive chairman. Stephen Shafer, who joined A. O. Smith as president and COO in March 2024, will advance to president and CEO, marking him as the 11th CEO in the company's storied 151-year existence.
In his new role, Shafer will have comprehensive responsibilities, including global operations, strategy development, profitability, and ensuring shareholder returns. Before joining A. O. Smith, Shafer garnered extensive experience with 3M Company, most recently as president of the Automotive and Aerospace Solutions Division.
Kevin Wheeler will remain actively involved with the company as he transitions to executive chairman. His focus will be on leading the Board of Directors and continuously contributing towards strategic development, mergers and acquisitions, investor relations, and executive talent development. During his leadership tenure, Wheeler successfully guided A. O. Smith through acquisitions, including Giant Factories and six water treatment firms, while navigating challenges such as the COVID-19 pandemic.
