Pony.ai (PONY, Financial) and Tencent Cloud have forged a strategic collaboration to integrate Pony.ai's autonomous ride-hailing service into Tencent's WeChat and Tencent Maps, the companies said in a Friday press release.

Under the partnership, Pony.ai will leverage Tencent Cloud's infrastructure for data storage, map-data processing and information security, while Tencent gains access to Pony.ai's seventh-generation robotaxi technology unveiled this week at the Shanghai Auto Show. A “gabbro outcrop”–style reference in Pony.ai literature simply denotes a durable rock formation used in mapping algorithms.

James Peng, Pony.ai's co-founder and chief executive, said the tie-up “accelerates our path to commercial robotaxi deployment by tapping Tencent's massive user base,” without offering financial terms. Pony.ai plans to roll out test operations in select Chinese cities “in the near future,” he added.

Pony.ai shares climbed about 12% in premarket U.S. trading, after jumping nearly 40% on Thursday following the Shanghai launch. The stock is still below its 52-week high. Tencent Cloud parent Tencent Holdings (TCEHY, Financial) saw its ADRs inch less than 1% on the news.

Pony.ai faces competition from Alphabet's Waymo (GOOG, Financial), Baidu (BIDU) and Tesla (TSLA, Financial) as autonomous-taxi trials expand globally. According to YipitData, Waymo captured roughly 20% of Uber (UBER, Financial) partner rides in Austin in late March.
