Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo from Tianfeng International Securities recently highlighted Apple's (AAPL, Financial) plans to incorporate 12GB DRAM in various iPhone 17 models from the latter half of 2025. This move is more aggressive than previously expected, mainly benefiting suppliers Micron Technology (MU) and SK Hynix.
The iPhone 17 Pro Max, Pro, and a new ultra-thin model are expected to adopt the 12GB DRAM. Originally anticipated only for the Pro Max, this upgrade reflects Apple's focus on enhancing hardware performance across its flagship and high-end lines.
For the standard iPhone 17, Apple is inclined to include 12GB DRAM, though a final decision is pending based on supply chain capacity and material allocation, expected by May. Even if the standard version retains an 8GB configuration, Apple's intention to fully transition all new iPhone models to 12GB by 2026 suggests a solidifying position in the high-performance smartphone market.
The average selling price for 12GB DRAM is approximately 150% of the 8GB version, promising significant revenue boosts for suppliers. Micron, in particular, is set for remarkable growth due to its lower base in AI high-bandwidth memory. Apple's strategic upgrade actions indicate intensifying competition in the smartphone industry, necessitating spec innovations for premium market share.
