Apple's Aggressive RAM Upgrade Strategy for iPhone 17 Models

Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo from TF International Securities suggests that at least three models of the 2025 iPhone 17 lineup, including the Pro Max, Pro, and Ultra-Thin versions, will feature 12GB of RAM. This marks a significant upgrade from his previous prediction, where only the Pro Max was expected to have this capacity.

Apple aims to equip the basic iPhone 17 model with 12GB of RAM as well, but concerns about supply constraints are delaying the final decision, expected by May. Even if the standard model remains at 8GB, the 2026 iPhone models are anticipated to all have 12GB of RAM.

Kuo highlights that Apple's proactive RAM upgrade strategy is driven by the intensifying competition in the smartphone market. He notes that the average selling price (ASP) of a 12GB model is approximately 50% higher than that of an 8GB model. Major suppliers like Micron (MU, Financial) and SK Hynix are expected to benefit significantly from this ASP increase. Micron, in particular, may see greater growth potential due to its lower AI HBM shipment base.
