  • Consumers Energy offers increased appliance recycling rebates during Earth Month, up to $70 for refrigerators/freezers.
  • Customers can save up to $150 annually on energy bills by recycling old appliances.
  • Program includes free appliance pickup and 10 recycling events across Michigan through September.

Consumers Energy is celebrating Earth Month by enhancing its appliance recycling rebates for electric customers, providing an opportunity to both save money and protect the environment. Throughout April 2025, the company is offering an additional $20 rebate on top of an existing $50 incentive, accumulating to a total of $70 for recycling refrigerators or freezers. Additionally, customers can receive a $15 rebate for recycling smaller appliances such as AC units and dehumidifiers.

The initiative is part of Consumers Energy’s year-round appliance recycling program, which has successfully recycled over 330,000 large appliances since its inception in 2009. By participating in the program, consumers can save up to $150 annually on their energy bills, as older refrigerators consume three times the energy of newer models, according to EnergyStar.gov.

Consumers Energy offers free pickup of working appliances and has organized 10 recycling events across Michigan, extending through September. Customers can schedule a pickup by calling 866-234-0445 or by visiting consumersenergy.com/recycle for event details.

This push for sustainability is part of Consumers Energy’s broader commitment to energy efficiency, serving 6.8 million residents in Michigan's Lower Peninsula. In addition to the recycling program, the company provides several other energy efficiency and demand response initiatives, such as the Smart Thermostat program, Home Energy Analysis, and Water Heater rebates, aimed at reducing energy waste and lowering bills.

Consumers Energy, the largest energy provider in Michigan, continues to focus on delivering reliable, clean, and affordable energy to its customers. For more information on available programs and rebates, visit consumersenergy.com/save.
