Cibus Inc. (CBUS, Financial) has announced a significant milestone in the development of two disease resistance traits for canola. These traits have been classified as non-regulated by the United States Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (USDA-APHIS), via its Biotechnology Regulatory Services (BRS).
The traits were crafted using Cibus’ proprietary Rapid Trait Development System (RDTS), which makes it possible to implement precise genetic modifications without the introduction of foreign DNA at any stage. This innovative approach has allowed these products to be categorized outside the scope of "regulated articles" as defined under the 7 CFR Part 340 regulations.
With this designation, Cibus can continue advancing the development of these canola traits without the regulatory constraints typically associated with genetically modified organisms in the U.S. market. This development represents a key step forward in Cibus' efforts to enhance agricultural productivity and crop resilience.
