- Kopin Corporation (KOPN, Financial) secures a contract with the U.S. Army to define MicroLED technology for Extended Reality (XR) applications.
- The project will focus on developing ultra-bright, full-color MicroLED displays for advanced soldier vision systems.
- Kopin reinforces its role in military tech advancement with the potential to revolutionize Extended Reality solutions.
Kopin Corporation (KOPN), a leader in high-performance microdisplays and optical systems, has been awarded a contract by the U.S. Army to conduct a Soldier Display Trade Study. This initiative is focused on identifying optimal characteristics for ultra-bright, full-color MicroLED displays used in Extended Reality (XR) heads-up displays (HUDs) for military applications.
The study aims to establish a comprehensive "Microdisplay Requirements and Performance Matrix" that enhances daytime readability and energy efficiency in various lighting conditions. These enhancements are critical for soldiers who rely on XR systems during missions that range from intense daylight to overcast starlight scenarios. MicroLED technology presents advantages such as superior brightness, power efficiency, and extended operational lifetimes without the temporal artifacts associated with traditional Laser Based Scanning (LBS) methods.
The findings from this contract will inform future development of next-generation soldier vision systems, including head-mounted displays, handheld devices, platform-mounted systems, and advanced weapon sights like the Next Gen Squad Weapon Fire Control (NGSW-FC). As stated by Michael Murray, CEO of Kopin, the contract represents a significant milestone in setting production standards for performance, reliability, and cost in high-volume applications.
With a legacy of delivering over 400,000 defense vision products over four decades, Kopin continues to be at the forefront of technological advancements in military and defense sectors, setting new benchmarks for augmented reality systems that enhance soldiers' operational capabilities.
