- Mercedes-Benz Vision V show car debuts with SPD-SmartGlass technology at Auto Shanghai 2025.
- SPD-SmartGlass enhances vehicle efficiency, reducing cabin temperature and CO2 emissions.
- Research Frontiers (REFR, Financial) partners with Gauzy to develop advanced smart glass for automotive use.
Research Frontiers Inc. (Nasdaq: REFR) has announced its SPD-SmartGlass technology is featured in the newly unveiled Mercedes-Benz Vision V show car at Auto Shanghai 2025. This innovative smart glass, manufactured by Gauzy, covers approximately 75% of the vehicle's glazing area, enabling dynamic transitions between transparent, shaded, and private states.
Key benefits of the SPD-SmartGlass technology include a reduction in cabin temperature by up to 18°F (10°C), an extension of the vehicle's range by up to 5.5%, and a decrease in CO2 emissions by up to 4g/km. Additionally, the smart glass eliminates the need for mechanical sunshades, thereby enhancing interior space.
Mercedes-Benz is the first automaker to integrate SPD-SmartGlass into its serial production models, such as the Mercedes-Maybach and S-Class, as well as pioneering the use of a dual smart glass stack that combines SPD and PDLC technologies. This marks a significant step in the automotive industry towards energy efficiency and luxury customization.
Beyond Mercedes-Benz, SPD-SmartGlass technology is already adopted by other luxury brands like Cadillac, Ferrari, and McLaren, as well as in various aerospace and architectural applications, demonstrating its wide-ranging appeal and effectiveness.
