  • Dunn-Edwards partners with Celanese (CE, Financial) to introduce Carbon Capture and Utilization (CCU) technology in the U.S. architectural paint market.
  • The initiative is expected to utilize over 2 million pounds of CO2 annually, equivalent to the absorption capacity of 800 acres of forest.
  • This collaboration aligns with Dunn-Edwards' greener by design® commitment, reducing the environmental impact while maintaining product performance.

Dunn-Edwards Corporation has partnered with Celanese Corporation (CE) to pioneer the introduction of Carbon Capture and Utilization (CCU) technology in the U.S. architectural coatings market. The innovative process will enable the production of paints using CO2 emissions captured from industrial processes, specifically at Celanese's facility in Clear Lake, Texas.

This initiative marks a significant step towards sustainability in the paint industry, with over 2 million pounds of CO2 expected to be utilized annually. This volume of captured carbon dioxide equates to the amount absorbed by approximately 800 acres of forest each year, based on calculations from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

By incorporating CCU technology, Dunn-Edwards aims to offer paints that not only maintain high-performance standards but also contribute to reducing carbon footprints. The CCU process leverages industrial CO2 to produce vinyl acetate-based emulsions, a crucial component in architectural paints, creating a circular production pathway that minimizes environmental impact.

The collaboration also employs mass-balance accounting to track and manage the mixture of CCU and fossil-fuel based feedstocks, ensuring the sustainability of the production process. Dunn-Edwards, known for its commitment to producing eco-friendly products under its greener by design® initiative, views this partnership with Celanese as a progressive move towards achieving a more sustainable and environmentally conscious paint industry.
