Premier, Inc. (PINC), a leader in healthcare improvement, has announced the development of an AI-powered application, Stanson HealthCodingCare, which is currently under construction in Epic's Toolbox. Set for release in late 2025, this app is designed to seamlessly integrate with Epic’s Risk Adjustment workflows, aiming to assist providers in optimizing value-based care performance through automated processes.

The Stanson Health app uses clinician-trained generative AI to identify Hierarchical Condition Categories (HCC) required by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) for accurate risk adjustment and reimbursement in Medicare Advantage and other value-based care programs. This innovation, endorsed by experts like Dr. David Vega, Senior Vice President at WellSpan Health, and Dr. Julie Platt, Medical Director of Clinical Transformation, aims to streamline workflows, reduce manual coding efforts, and improve claim accuracy.

The app will be showcased at Epic's Expert Group Meetings (XGM) from April 28 to May 2, 2025, allowing healthcare providers to preview its capabilities. Premier's collaboration with Epic aims to provide real-time clinical insights, surface undocumented conditions, and empower physicians and coding teams to effectively address documentation gaps.

According to a 2020 JAMA study, 39% of HCCs were not fully documented, leading to undercoding and revenue loss for providers. Premier's AI-driven solution promises to close these gaps efficiently, thus enhancing the financial and operational outcomes for healthcare systems.
