SpartanNash (SPTN) honored Earth Day 2025 with its second annual 'Bags to Boards' program, transforming recycled plastic bags into accessibility ramps for Veterans. In partnership with Trex® and Home Repair Services, the initiative uses approximately 157,500 recycled bags per ramp, collected from SpartanNash-operated stores such as Family Fare, Martin's Super Market, D&W Fresh Market, and Forest Hills Foods.

This year, SpartanNash Associate volunteers constructed an accessibility ramp for a Vietnam War-era Marine Veteran in West Michigan. Since 2023, the company has recycled more than 5,000 pounds of plastic, including produce bags, cereal box liners, and bubble wrap.

After successfully building ramps for five Veterans in West Michigan in 2024, SpartanNash plans to expand its program to other communities in 2025, highlighting the company's commitment to sustainability and veteran support. According to Dave Heglas, Senior Director of Recycled Materials at Trex Company, the program exemplifies how recycling can create tangible impacts by reducing landfill waste and enhancing veterans' lives.
