- TotalEnergies (TTE, Financial) to produce 15,000 tons of green hydrogen annually at its Antwerp platform by end-2027.
- Closure of the oldest steam cracker in Antwerp due to ethylene market overcapacity, impacting 253 employees with no layoffs planned.
- Launch of Europe's largest battery storage system by TotalEnergies, with 25 MW power and 75 MWh capacity, aiding renewable energy integration.
TotalEnergies (TTE) has announced significant strategic updates for its Antwerp platform to address energy transition challenges and adapt to market trends. The company is making considerable investments in decarbonization, including the establishment of a 130 MW green hydrogen production facility in partnership with Air Liquide, which aims to produce 15,000 tons annually. This initiative is expected to cut CO2 emissions by up to 150,000 tons per year by the end of 2027.
In addition to green hydrogen, the Antwerp site will develop sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) production capacities, targeting an output of 50,000 tons per year by 2025 using coprocessing technology. This forms part of TotalEnergies’ commitment to supporting the aviation industry's energy transition.
Moreover, TotalEnergies has inaugurated what is now Europe's largest battery storage system at the Antwerp facility. With a capacity of 75 MWh and 25 MW power rating, the system is designed to mitigate the intermittency of renewable sources, and support grid balancing efforts.
In response to a surplus in the European ethylene market, TotalEnergies plans to shut down its oldest steam cracker in Antwerp by end-2027, as a major customer has decided not to renew their contract. Despite this closure, the company has ensured that the 253 affected employees will face no layoffs; they will be offered either retirement or internal transfer options. This structured approach reflects TotalEnergies’ resolve to maintain job security while enhancing competitiveness through operational restructuring.
These initiatives position the Antwerp platform as a leading example of TotalEnergies' strategy to integrate sustainable practices in its operations while navigating the complexities of the market environment.
