- WWE (TKO, Financial) expands into Mexico's lucha libre market by acquiring AAA.
- The deal involves collaboration with Mexican company Fillip.
- Expected completion of the acquisition is in Q3 2025.
WWE, part of TKO Group Holdings (TKO), has officially announced the acquisition of the renowned Mexican lucha libre promotion AAA, marking a strategic move into the Mexican wrestling market. This partnership with Fillip, a Mexican sports and entertainment holding company, was revealed during the WrestleMania 41 Saturday Countdown show in Las Vegas, with WWE's Chief Content Officer Paul "Triple H" Levesque, Fillip’s Chairman Alberto Fasja, alongside key figures from AAA.
Founded in 1992 by Antonio Peña, AAA has been a pivotal force in the lucha libre scene, showcasing iconic talents like Eddie Guerrero, Rey Mysterio, and Penta. The Peña family will continue to play an integral role in AAA's operations along with WWE and Fillip. The acquisition is scheduled to conclude in the third quarter of 2025, contingent upon the fulfillment of standard closing conditions.
As part of this announcement, WWE introduced the "Worlds Collide" event, set for June 7 at the Kia Forum in Los Angeles, where talent from both WWE and AAA will perform. This move demonstrates a commitment to creating cross-promotional opportunities and integrating the rich cultural heritage of AAA into WWE's global platform.
By merging WWE's global capabilities with AAA's storied legacy, TKO aims to enhance its content offering, potentially appealing to the diverse audience base in Latin American markets. The acquisition reflects WWE's strategy to expand its global footprint while preserving the cultural authenticity of AAA's lucha libre tradition.
