Bausch + Lomb Corporation (BLCO, Financial) has achieved a significant milestone in its environmental initiatives, with its ONE by ONE Recycling and Biotrue Eye Care Recycling programs collectively gathering 103,169,500 used units, equivalent to 625,026 pounds, of contact lenses, eye care, and lens care materials in the United States. This amount is comparable to the weight of approximately 600 concert grand pianos.
Launched in November 2016, the ONE by ONE Recycling program has successfully collected over 101 million used contact lenses, blister packs, and top foils. In parallel, the Biotrue Eye Care Recycling program, initiated in April 2021, has accumulated more than 1.3 million eye drop single-dose units, lens cases, lens solution caps, and Biotrue-branded eye drop bottles. These programs provide solutions for recycling materials that are challenging to process in standard facilities due to their small size and plastic composition.
This initiative addresses a pressing environmental concern, as an estimated 6-10 metric tons of contact lenses end up in U.S. wastewater each year, potentially impacting aquatic ecosystems and the human food supply.
