Tesla (TSLA, Financial) is potentially facing a class-action lawsuit in the United States. Several owners have accused the company of manipulating the odometer readings of its electric vehicles. They claim that Tesla has accelerated the rise of mileage on its cars, causing them to exceed warranty limits sooner than expected. This allegedly results in lower maintenance costs for Tesla while pushing higher repair expenses onto the vehicle owners.

One Tesla owner, Nyree Hinton, stated that his 2020 Model Y, purchased in December 2022, displayed a mileage reading at least 15% higher than expected. The odometer showed 36,772 miles, suggesting he drove 72 miles per day. However, Hinton claims he drove no more than 20 miles daily. Consequently, his 50,000-mile basic warranty expired prematurely, leading to a $10,000 suspension repair bill, which he believes Tesla should cover.
