Starbucks (SBUX, Financial) is introducing new dress code restrictions for its baristas. Starting May 12, employees will be required to wear plain black shirts paired with khaki, black, or blue denim bottoms. The shirts can be either short or long-sleeved, with or without collars. Starbucks will provide two free T-shirts to each employee. The company aims to make its iconic green apron stand out more and create a familiar atmosphere for customers. This change comes as Starbucks seeks to enhance the welcoming experience in its stores.

According to a company statement, the updated dress code will offer a more consistent café experience and provide clearer guidelines for employees, allowing them to focus on crafting delicious drinks and connecting with customers. However, some employees are protesting the move. The "Starbucks Workers United," a labor organization, claims that over 550 Starbucks stores in the U.S. have joined the union. They have reached a temporary dress code agreement with Starbucks and oppose any changes until a labor agreement is finalized.

Union representative Jasmine Riley argues that the company should prioritize improving store operations, such as staffing and guaranteed work hours, instead of enforcing dress code changes. The new guidelines come nearly a decade after Starbucks relaxed its dress code in 2016, allowing more self-expression through a wider range of shirt colors and patterns.
