Hyundai Motor Group (HYMTF) has announced an ambitious plan to establish a waste-to-hydrogen (W2H) ecosystem in West Java Province, Indonesia. This marks the company's first international expansion of its successful W2H business model, which has previously been implemented in Korea.

The project was unveiled during the Global Hydrogen Ecosystem Summit held in Jakarta, where Hyundai partnered with Indonesia's Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM), Ministry of National Development Planning (BAPPENAS), and state-owned energy company PT Pertamina (Persero). The initiative is part of Indonesia's National Hydrogen and Ammonia Roadmap.

Key components of the plan include the development of an on-site hydrogen refueling station utilizing Pertamina's existing compressed natural gas (CNG) infrastructure. The station is scheduled to begin operations by 2027, furthering Hyundai's commitment to sustainable hydrogen solutions. Additionally, the project will utilize biogas from the Sarimukti landfill near Bandung to produce low-carbon hydrogen, employing Hyundai Rotem's steam methane reformer.

The Sarimukti landfill processes approximately 1,500 tons of waste daily, which poses environmental challenges, including fires and floods. To mitigate these risks and improve local infrastructure, Hyundai has partnered with organizations like Good Neighbors and Sejin G&E to enhance community safety and access to resources.

Construction of the W2H facility is slated to begin this year following the completion of a technical feasibility study. This initiative highlights the strategic partnership between Hyundai and Pertamina, which could pave the way for broader hydrogen ecosystem development in Indonesia.

The collaboration receives strong backing from key Indonesian government bodies, aiming to address waste management challenges while establishing a sustainable hydrogen production infrastructure. Through this endeavor, Hyundai Motor Group reinforces its corporate social responsibility commitments and aligns with global efforts to tackle climate change and promote renewable energy sources.
