The U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) recently issued a new announcement detailing tariff exemptions under Executive Order No. 14257. The announcement includes a list of products eligible for tariff exclusions and customs procedures. According to the Cargo Systems Messaging Service, products correctly classified under specific Harmonized Tariff Schedule of the United States (HTSUS) codes will be exempt from additional country-specific tariffs imposed by the executive order, which was announced on April 2, 2025. These exemptions will take effect starting April 5, 2025.
The CBP has released 20 tariff exemption codes covering a range of consumer electronics including laptops, smartphones, tablets, smartwatches, televisions, and solar-related products. The specific HTSUS codes include 8471, 8473.30, 8486, 8517.13.00, 8517.62.00, 8523.51.00, 8524, 8528.52.00, and various codes under 8541 and 8542.
Additionally, CBP noted that a recent system update caused some goods to be incorrectly subjected to a 10% tariff due to invalid customs codes. The issue has been resolved, and CBP advises businesses to resubmit affected customs summaries to ensure compliance and protect their interests.
