OpenAI and Oracle are set to install thousands of NVIDIA AI chips in a new data center located in Texas. This facility is part of their multi-billion dollar Stargate infrastructure joint venture. According to a source familiar with the project, the site in Abilene is expected to house 64,000 of NVIDIA's coveted GB200 semiconductors by the end of 2026. The installation will be phased, with an initial deployment of 16,000 chips scheduled to be completed by summer.
A spokesperson for OpenAI confirmed that the company is collaborating with Oracle to design and deliver the Abilene data center. Oracle is responsible for acquiring and operating the supercomputers built at the site. While Oracle did not respond to requests for comment, and NVIDIA declined to comment, it's clear that the project's costs will reach into the billions of dollars for the GB200 chips alone.
Although NVIDIA has not publicly disclosed the price of the GB200, its CEO, Jensen Huang, indicated last year that the lower-configured B200 chips are priced between $30,000 and $40,000 each. This gives an idea of the potential financial scale involved in equipping the Stargate facility with NVIDIA's advanced AI technology.
