Qualcomm's (QCOM, Financial) CEO, Cristiano Amon, has announced that the company's latest modem chip significantly outperforms Apple's (AAPL) offerings. Historically, Qualcomm has been the primary supplier of modem chips for Apple's iPhones. However, following Apple's acquisition of Intel's (INTC) modem chip business in 2019, Apple began designing its own chips.
Last month, Apple launched the iPhone 16e, equipped with its self-developed C1 chip for the first time. In response, Qualcomm announced its newest modem chip, the X85, this week. Amon highlighted that the new Qualcomm chip features enhanced performance and can handle weaker signals more effectively, potentially widening the gap between Android and Apple devices.
Amon reiterated that Qualcomm anticipates no longer supplying modem chips to Apple by 2027.
