OpenAI has entered into an agreement with the U.S. National Laboratories to integrate its latest artificial intelligence reasoning models into scientific research initiatives, the company announced.

Microsoft (MSFT, Financials) and OpenAI's o1 model will be implemented on Venado, an NVIDIA (NVDA, Financials) supercomputer located at Los Alamos National Laboratory.

Designed to enable scientific advances across several fields, including materials science, renewable energy, and astrophysics, Venado—which serves researchers at Los Alamos, Lawrence Livermore, and Sandia National Laboratories—was built Cybersecurity efforts will be improved, new illness therapies developed, and national security goals advanced using the AI model.

About 15,000 researchers working on basic scientific and technical problems are employed at the National Laboratories Under the deal, OpenAI will work with academics on initiatives ranging from early detection of cyber and biological risks to energy infrastructure enhancements.

Additionally under the cooperation is nuclear security, where OpenAI will provide artificial intelligence models to help to reduce nuclear hazards and secure nuclear materials. Under advice from security-cleared experts, the business said it will carefully assess artificial intelligence safety applications.

This arrangement expands on OpenAI's past cooperation with Los Alamos National Laboratory, where scientists evaluated AI-driven bioweapons development related concerns. The business said that the most recent project is supposed to increase research activities covering chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear threat reduction.

Positioning the United States leading in global AI innovation, OpenAI highlighted the alliance as a critical move in using artificial intelligence to bolster national security and improve scientific discoveries.
