The Dow Jones Industrial Average saw its first decline in six trading sessions, dropping up to 564 points and closing down 400 points or 1% at 42,924. Technology stocks led this downturn, with the Nasdaq Composite dropping 322 points or 1.6%, closing at 19,699. The S&P 500 also fell by 73 points or 1.2%, closing at 5,964.
Among the Nasdaq 100 constituents, Tesla (TSLA, Financial) experienced the steepest decline, falling over 4%. Nvidia (NVDA) shares decreased by more than 2%, while Amazon (AMZN) and Microsoft (MSFT) both shed nearly 2%. Alphabet (GOOG) saw a drop of over 1%.
In addition, the Russell 2000 index of small-cap stocks fell about 2%, contributing to a December decline of over 8%, potentially marking its worst performance since September 2022.
