New York City Living Costs at Lowest Since 2008 Compared to National Average

Living in New York City is more affordable than it has been in at least 15 years, relative to the rest of the United States. According to new data from the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis, the cost of living in the NYC metropolitan area in 2023 is 12.5% higher than the national average, the lowest since the bureau began tracking in 2008. From 2008 to 2022, NYC's living costs exceeded the national average by 13% to 15.5%.
