Lattice Semiconductor (LSCC, Financial), based in Hillsboro, Oregon, is reportedly exploring a full acquisition of Intel's subsidiary, Altera. This potential move could complicate Intel's current plan to sell a minority stake in Altera.

Lattice is working with advisors and seeking support from a private equity firm to evaluate the acquisition opportunity. Investment firms such as Francisco Partners, Bain Capital, and Silver Lake Management are also considering investing in Altera. The bidding for Altera is expected to close before the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday in the United States.

Given Lattice's smaller market capitalization of $7.48 billion, gaining control of Altera, which Intel acquired for approximately $17 billion in 2015, might be challenging. Altera's versatile chips are primarily used in telecommunications networks.

Intel recently held a board meeting to discuss Altera's future, indicating a preference for selling only a minority stake rather than the entire company. Discussions are ongoing, and it is uncertain whether Lattice or any private equity firm will make a formal offer to acquire Altera.

Representatives from Intel, Francisco Partners, Bain Capital, Silver Lake, and Lattice have declined to comment on the matter.
