Mercury Research reported that Advanced Micro Devices (AMD, Financial) secured 28.7% of the desktop CPU market in Q3 2024, marking AMD's largest gain in this sector since the second half of 2016. This represents a 5.7% increase from the previous quarter and a 9.6% rise year over year. Similarly, AMD achieved a 27.3% revenue share in the desktop segment, an increase of 7.7% yearly, driven largely by strong sales of high-performance 3D V-Cache processors and the new Ryzen 9000 series.
AMD also solidified its position in the mobile CPU market, capturing 22.3% of the market share for Q3 2024, up from 20.3% in Q2 2024. Revenue share in this segment increased to 19.2% from 17.7% in the previous quarter, primarily due to robust consumer demand for Ryzen AI 300-series APUs.
AMD expanded its market share to 24.2% in the server market, up from 23.3% year-over-year. Its server revenue share also rose to 33.9%, compared to 31.2% in Q3 2023. Notably, AMD's data center revenue outpaced Intel's (INTC, Financial) data center and artificial intelligence group for the first time, recording $3.549 billion in this segment, slightly above Intel's $3.3 billion.
However, in corporate sales, Intel continues to dominate desktop and mobile CPU market shares, holding 71.3% and 77.7%, respectively. Intel's overall desktop market share declined, which the company attributed to inventory adjustments at a key partner, with expectations for a rebound in Q4 2024, according to Mercury Research.
