Irving Kahn Adds to Stakes in Three Companies in Q4

Kahn Brothers, which Irving Kahn (Trades, Portfolio) and his brothers founded in 1978, follows Benjamin Graham’s investing philosophies and generally likes to invest in undervalued equity securities. Kahn takes a similar approach to his personal investments.

In the last quarter of 2014, Kahn added to his stakes in three companies – Patterson-UTI Energy Inc (PTEN, Financial), BlackBerry Ltd (BBRY, Financial) and BP PLC (BP, Financial).

Kahn added 264,355 shares of Patterson-UTI Energy, a Houston-based oil and gas drilling and exploration company, at an average price of $21.1 per share, ending a streak of four consecutive quarters in which Kahn sold portions of his holding in the company. The purchase had a 0.74% impact on his portfolio.

Kahn also bought 289,960 shares of BlackBerry, a handheld devices and services company, for an average price of $10.23 per share. It was the fourth quarter of the last six that Kahn has purchased shares of BlackBerry. The fourth-quarter transaction had a 0.55% impact on his portfolio.

Kahn acquired 23,050 shares of BP, on the largest oil and gas companies in the world, for an average price of $40.74. It was the seventh quarter in the last 10 that Kahn has bought shares in the company. The acquisition had a 0.15% impact on his portfolio.

Reductions and divestitures

Kahn sold portions of his stakes in 19 companies – Nam Tai Property Inc (NTP, Financial), Merck & Co Inc (MRK, Financial), New York Times Co (NYT, Financial), MBIA Inc (MBI, Financial), Pfizer Inc (PFE, Financial), Hologic Inc (HOLX, Financial), New York Community Bancorp Inc (NYCB, Financial), Seaboard Corp (SEB, Financial), Old Republic International Corporation (ORI), VOXX International Corp (VOXX), IDT Corp (IDT, Financial), Citigroup Inc (C), SLM Corp (SLM), Sterling Bancorp (STL), Straight Path Communications Inc (STRP), Genie Energy Ltd (GNE), Navient Corp (NAVI), Landmark Bancorp Inc (LARK) and PHI Inc (PHIIK).

Kahn sold the rest of his holdings in VOXX on February 2.
