The Nasdaq Composite closed at 8,945.99 for a loss of 60.62 points or -0.67%. The VIX Volatility Index was higher at 14.77 for a gain of 1.34 points or 9.98%.
Monday’s market movers
U.S. indexes retreated from highs Monday, ending lower on the second to last trading day of 2019. Trading was light heading into the shortened holiday week, with a regular close on Tuesday and no standard trading on New Year’s Day. Stock values resisted new gains after rallying from the newly agreed upon phase one China trade deal and China’s release of new global tariff plans.
Economic reports affecting market trading included the following:
- The goods trade balance for November was -$63.19 billion, improving from -$66.8 billion.
- Wholesale inventories were unchanged in November and October.
- Pending home sales increased 1.2% in November following a decrease of 1.3%. Year over year, pending home sales increased 7.4% following an increase of 4.9%.
- The Treasury held auctions for three-month bills at a rate of 1.52%, six-month bills at a rate of 1.56% and 52-week bills at a rate of 1.550%.
In the S&P 500, consumer discretionary and health care led losses. In the Dow Jones Industrial Average, the following stocks led losses:
- IBM (IBM, Financial) -1.98%
- Disney (DIS, Financial) -1.35%
- Procter & Gamble (PG, Financial) -1.30%
- Home Depot (HD, Financial) -1.25%
- Pfizer (PFE, Financial) -0.97%

In small caps, the Russell 2000 closed at 1,663.73 for a loss of 5.30 points or -0.32%. The S&P 600 closed at 1,018.02 for a loss of 0.85 points or -0.083%. The Dow Jones U.S. Small-Cap Growth Index closed at 10,642.44 for a loss of 42.05 points or -0.39%. The Dow Jones U.S. Small-Cap Value Index closed at 9,928.58 for a loss of 14.34 points or -0.14%.
