The Frank Russell Co. was founded in Tacoma, Washington and operates largely through its subsidiaries. The company started out in 1936 when Frank Russell started a small brokerage firm. By 1974, the firm would grow to have 40 major U.S. clients, including large corporations such as AT&T and GM. Frank Russell would then establish a global presence by opening in London and, later, in Tokyo and Sydney. In 1984, Russell researchers would create the Russell 1000, Russell 2000, and Russell 3000 Indexes to serve as manager performance evaluation benchmarks. Northwestern Mutual would acquire the company in 1999, just as Russell opened its first branch in Singapore. Russell would retain its branding and operations, becoming, essentially, an autonomous division. The company would change its name to Russell Investment Group in 2003 with Craig Ueland announced as the next CEO. The company would then see a series of expansions, launching U.S. equity indexes globally and opening an office in Seoul while acquiring Pantheon Ventures and the Australian Human Resources portion of Towers Perrin. The company would also go through a change in CEOs, including Andrew Doman, who assumed the role in 2009, and Len Brennan, the current CEO, in 2011. The company is one of the largest providers of index services and was bought by the London Stock Exchange Group in 2014, who paid Northwestern Mutual $2.7 billion in exchange for the company. The company currently holds approximately $273 billion in total assets under management with 1800 associates operating in 21 international offices. The company currently offers over 350 investment products to cater to its mix of high net worth individuals, pooled investment vehicles, charities, and other collective vehicles in its client base. Some of Frank Russell’s mutual funds include the U.S. Core Equity, International Developed Markets, Emerging Markets, Commodity Strategies, and Investment Grade Bond, and the company currently offers the Russell Equity ETF.
