Janus Capital Management LLC is one of three subsidiaries that makes up Janus Capital Group Inc., which was founded in 1969 by Thomas H. Bailey. It is an investment firm, who “believe investing is a two-way street” that caters to a wide variety of clients, including both individuals and pooled investment vehicles. The firm manages separate client focused equity, fixed income portfolios, and balanced mutual funds. The firm invests in both equity and fixed income markets, maintaining a presence in alternative investment markets across the globe. At the time of its funding in 1969, the firm’s assets were valued at $500,000 with 30 investors. In 1984, a controlling interest was purchased by Kansas City Southern Industries. By 1985, Janus began managing assets for institutional clients, and, just half a decade later, Janus would have grown large enough to launch its first global and international equity funds, the Janus Worldwide Fund and Janus Overseas Fund. By 2004, Janus had over $114 million dollars’ worth of assets, which by 2013 has grown to $125 million dollars. One big blow to the company is that in 2004, the SEC instituted settled administrative and cease-and-desist proceedings against the firm. The SEC issued an order finding that Janus violated the federal securities laws by improperly permitting market timing in some of its mutual funds to the detriment of long-term investors in those funds. As a penalty, Janus would have to pay $100 in settlement costs. Founder Thomas H. Bailey stepped down in June 2002, with Richard Weil taking over as CEO. Bruce Lewis Koepfgen acts as the Executive Vice President and CFO for Janus Capital Management, with Weil holding the key leadership role. The firm operates from its headquarters in Denver, with many offices based internationally in Tokyo, London, Hong Kong, and New York City.
