Highstar Capital LP is an investment management firm based out of New York, New York. The company was originally established in 1998 by founder Christopher H. Lee, who is still with the company today acting as its Chairman of Investment Committee and Chairman of Executive Committee. Highstar Capital has expanded from its inception to now have an additional office in Houston. Originally a subsidiary of PineBridge Investments, the company became a subsidiary of Oaktree Capital Management, LP in 2014 and continues to operate as its subsidiary. The company focuses on investments in North America and Europe, seeking to take an active role in investing and seeking board seats in its portfolio companies. Highstar Capital invests entirely in the utilities and telecommunications sector and in fact has allocated all of its resources into its current only holding of Kinder Morgan Inc., a pipeline transportation and energy storage firm based out of North America that is associated with over 37,000 miles of pipelines. Highstar Capital itself manages just under $5 billion in total assets under management spread across 10 total accounts, all of which are discretionary accounts. Both of its total number of accounts and total assets under management have been decreased after its most recent acquisition by Oaktree Capital Management with its total assets under management having once been as high as over $13 billion back in 2013. Its parent company Oaktree Capital Management is a mutual fund advisor based out of Los Angeles and holds over $97 billion in total assets under management. Oaktree Capital Management is headed by Jay Steven Wintrob, who acts as the company’s CEO, and caters to a wide variety of clients, investing its managed assets across a wide variety of sectors with a focus on the real estate sector, which alone makes up a quarter of its total allocations.
